Why You Should Include Protein in Your Diet

What exactly is a balanced diet?

While watching your calories, sugar and salt intake, you should also keep an eye on the amount of protein you’re ingesting. Protein from fresh meat and vegetables available in Davao supermarkets plays a key role in the creating and maintaining body cells. It acts like a fuel to our cells and amplifies our immune system.

Protein is made up of amino acids, commonly known as the “building blocks of our body”, because they are attached in long chains. It is also considered a “macronutrient,” meaning that you need relatively large amounts of it to stay healthy.

We did some research and realized how protein is very important in our diet. We narrowed all these benefits down to five and we hope this will make you think and realize why you should make sure you are getting enough protein every day:

  1. Build. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage and skin. Your hair and nails are mostly made of protein.
  2. Repair. Your body needs protein to build and repair tissue.
  3. Oxygenate. Red blood cells contain a protein compound that carries oxygen throughout the body. This process helps supply your entire body with the nutrients it needs.
  4. Digest. About half the dietary protein that you consume each day goes into making enzymes, which aids in digesting food, and making new cells and body chemicals.
  5. Regulate. Unknown to most teenagers, protein plays an important role in hormone regulation - especially during the transformation and development of cells during puberty.

Eating high-protein foods has many fitness benefits, including: speeding recovery after exercise and/or injury, reducing muscle loss, building lean muscle, helping maintain a healthy weight, curbing hunger.

Like carbs and fat, protein is a macronutrient, which means we need a relatively large amount of it to stay healthy. But unlike carbs and fat, your body doesn’t store protein from day to day. That means it’s up to you to meet your body’s protein needs each and every day. So now the question is, how much protein do you need everyday? Well that will ultimately depend on your age and body weight. The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) for adults over the age of 18 is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. By this calculation, a person weighing 155 pounds (70 kilograms) should aim for 56 grams of protein per day.

For some people, there may be health risks associated with a high-protein diet. For example, if

If you have no specific health concerns and are physically active, it's unlikely that eating more protein than recommended will significantly damage your health. However, if you have any doubts, or your plan involves upping your intake of animal proteins and other high-fat sources of protein, it can be a good idea to discuss any dietary changes with your physician or a registered dietitian before you proceed.
